Why our lactation hot chocolate only has 5 ingredients...

When you're breastfeeding, there is nothing more important than what you put into your body. You need to nourish and fuel yourself, and be aware of what your baby may be drinking via your breastmilk.
This is why all of our teas and hot chocolates are free of any flavouring, additive or preservative. We don't need stabilisers for our products, as we believe that avoiding these endocrine affecting ingredients is best for both you and your baby.
If you look at the ingredients on other lactation drinks, you'll find refined anti-caking agents, stabilisers, emulsifiers, flavouring and glucose (as well as cane sugar). These e-numbers and additives help extend the shelf life of the drink but they will impact your hormones and health.
So what's in our lactation hot chocolate?
Cacao
Cacao is the number one ingredient. This is unusual as in general, sugar is the highest percentage ingredient in a standard hot chocolate. A 'normal' hot chocolate also includes cocoa mass, not actual cacao. This ultra processed form of cocoa loses a huge amount of it's natural goodness. In contrast, our fair trade, organic Ghanaian cacao is incredibly high in B vitamins and minerals like chromium which can support your body with energy.
Coconut Sugar
We don't used refined cane sugar in our hot chocolate. Instead, we use coconut sugar that offers an alternative with a lower glycemic index - between 35 and 54, compared to 60-65. It is minimally processed which gives it a richer caramel flavour and also allows it to retain trace elements of minerals and vitamins. It also contains inulin which is a soluble fibre that can slow down sugar absorption and reduce blood sugar spikes. Do bear in mind, this is still a relatively high sugar drink that should be enjoyed in moderation.
Brewer's Yeast
A byproduct of the brewing industry, this is alcohol-free and a traditional lactation supplement, given to dairy animals to support milk production, and historically used by women for the same reason.
Coconut Milk Powder
Giving the hot chocolate a subtle creaminess, it also support electrolyte recovery as breastfeeding is thirsty and dehydrating work.
Salt
Essential to balance the sugar content.
That's it.
So you can drink knowing you have the most nourishing, natural and delicious way to support your body.
