Breastfeeding is a unique journey for every mother, and many new mums look for natural ways to establish and support their milk supply. There are certain foods and herbs-known as galactagogues (from the Greek 'galacto' meaning milk), that have traditionally been used to help promote lactation.

Here’s how and why, four of the most well known can help to support breastfeeding mums.

Fennel

Fennel is often included in lactation teas and supplements. It contains phytoestrogens-plant compounds that mimic estrogen in the body-which may help stimulate the mammary glands and enhance milk flow. Some research suggests that fennel can improve both the quantity and fat content of breast milk. While more studies are needed, many mothers and lactation professionals include fennel as part of a holistic approach to supporting milk supply.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is one of the most widely used herbal galactagogues. Several studies show that many mothers feel fenugreek helps increase their milk supply, particularly in the early days postpartum. Its potential effect is thought to come from compounds that may increase the production of prolactin and oxytocin, hormones essential for milk production.

Oats

Oats are a staple in many lactation-boosting recipes, especially cookies and lactation. They are rich in iron, which is important because low iron levels can contribute to reduced milk supply. Oats also contain saponins and beta-glucan, which may help increase levels of prolactin, the hormone responsible for milk production. While direct scientific evidence is limited, oats are a nutritious food that supports overall health and is widely recommended for breastfeeding mothers.

Brewer’s Yeast

Brewer’s yeast is a nutrient-dense supplement packed with B vitamins, iron, protein, and trace minerals like selenium and chromium. It is believed to help boost energy and support milk production.
