Milk's Up Breastfeeding Tea

Milk's Up breastfeeding tea is a herbal blend designed to naturally support mothers while nursing. Because whilst this time with your baby is amazing - it can also be really hard and a cup of tea can be a huge support.

All it's ingredients are 100% natural - fennel, nettle, fenugreek seeds, lemon verbena and aniseed . These are herbs which have been used for millennia to support lactation, but they also taste delicious. Fennel and fenugreek have the strongest links to increasing milk supply in research, and fenugreek is also linked to having immunity boosting benefits.

We couldn't be prouder of this multi-award winning tea! It won  'Best Maternity Product' - at the 2019 UK Baby Awards, and 'Best Breastfeeding Support Product', at the 2020 Project Baby Awards.

Each whole leaf tea bag can make up to 3 cups of tea, depending on your personal taste.  Just follow these instructions:
1. Use 1 whole leaf tea bag in a 300ml cup
2. Pour freshly boiled water over it
3. Brew for 3-5 minutes, depending on your taste
4. Remove bag from cup, and keep in a small dish (or egg cup!) by your kettle
5. Re-brew your bag, and just leave it in the cup for a little longer
6. Relax and take a moment with your cuppa.

We don’t recommend adding milk, but a drop of honey or lemon can be a good match.

The herbs in this blend have been used traditionally to support lactation and nursing mothers.

Nettle: Anecdotal evidence for hundreds of years suggests that nettle can support milk supply

We recommend having 3-4 cups a day in combination with other techniques, including expressing/feeding as much as possible, having skin to skin, getting as much sleep as possible, eating a nourishing diet.

This blend should only be consumed once your baby arrives.

Natural galactagogues - adding other natural galactagogues to your diet - oats are great, eat porridge, flapjack and oaty biscuits.

Nourish yourself - your body is magically creating milk and needs both hydration and calories to do this successfully. Make sure you eat regularly - it can be so easy to forget, and drink while the baby drinks. It’s recommended to have up to 3 litres of water a day when breastfeeding, and you can get this from herbal teas as well as water alone. Regular small, healthy snacks (and the occasional unhealthy) are great to keep you feeling as positive and happy as possible.

Feed to demand - this is the only way guaranteed to assist. Your body will produce more breastmilk as your baby demands it, so pump and express milk alongisde feeding. Just ensure you're nourished while this happens - water, food and tea.

How many cups should I have a day?
We recommend having up to 3-4 cups a day. Combine this with pumping to establish your milk supply and get some confidence before the baby arrives. NHS guidelines recommend a maximum 4 cups of any herbal tea a day. The impact of natural herbs will vary person to person.

Why are these herbs used to support my milk flow?
Fenugreek, fennel, aniseed, and even oats, have all been used historically to support breast feeding. No one 100% knows why, lab studies link an active component - diosgenin, to helping breastfeeding. But the truth is, no one truly knows! Long historical use and anecdotal evidence are strong, and as a great way to hydrate and bring calm and a warm hug in a mug - it seems to work!

What is the research behind the blend?
Whilst there is extremely limited standardised and empirical evidence into the efficacy of herbs in helping lactation and milk supply, some key herbs have been used for centuries to assist women who are struggling, especially in India and the Middle East.Fennel and Fenugreek in particular have been used by breastfeeding women for hundreds of years to increase milk supply. The seeds contain phytoestogens which mimic your female hormone, oestrogen. Nettle and anise have also been linked to helping breast milk, but the research is more limited here.
